Relight my shire!

Buckinghamshire Highways, 16 December 2024 - Streetlighting

We are nearing completion of our Capital Streetlighting Stump Replacement programme, replacing the redundant stumps with brand new columns and energy efficient LED lighting.

A stump is a streetlight that has been made safe following a road traffic collision (RTC) where the column has been cut at the shoulder. This year, 117 columns were replaced as part of the capital works programme.

Reinstated streetlights in Buckinghamshire are installed with energy efficient LED lighting. LED lighting consumes 60-80% less energy (compared to traditional Sodium & Sox lamps) which produces significant energy savings and a reduction in carbon emissions. The current LED lanterns have a 10-year guarantee and have been known to last for 15 years or more. This increased lifespan reduces the operational maintenance requirements and associated costs. LEDs also have improved brightness and colour rendering properties and do produce a more uniformed light source, helping to provide visibility on our roads and footways.
