Business Improvement Districts (BIDs)
A business improvement district (BID) is a scheme to support a commercial area such as a town centre or industrial estate by introducing new services or initiatives.
BID schemes are led and funded by local businesses.
Business rate payers in a BID are charged extra tax, in addition to their business rates bill.
This money is used to develop projects that benefit all businesses in the area.
A BID can only be formed following a:
- consultation
- ballot in which business rate payers vote on a business plan that sets out how the BID will be managed and operated
