Fostering a family member or child of a family friend

Kinship care, sometimes referred to as ‘family and friends care’, is when a child is looked after full-time or most of the time by a relative or close family friend.

As a kinship carer, you can provide a safe and secure home for children who are unable to be cared for by their birth parents and provide stability by maintaining relationships with their family and loved ones.

Who can be a kinship carer

This could be:

  • grandparents (the most common placement)
  • aunts and uncles
  • older siblings
  • somebody they know well

“I used to say that I would never encourage anyone to be a Special Guardian but with all the support that I have received, I have changed my mind and would now say ‘go for it’.”
