Apply for money off Council Tax if you are a member of visiting forces
You may be able to get money off Council Tax if you have a 'relevant association' with a visiting force.
The visiting force must be from a country where the Visiting Forces Act 1952 applies.
What counts as having a 'relevant association'
A person has a 'relevant association' with a visiting force if they are:
- a member of the visiting force
- a member of a civilian part of the force
- a dependant of a member (if the dependant is not a British citizen or an ordinary resident of the United Kingdom)
Evidence required
Alongside your application, you will need to submit one of the following:
- a certificate issued under Section 11 of the Visiting Forces Act 1952
- written confirmation from the relevant defence organisation

You can make an application and submit evidence online.
What happens next
We will review your application and all evidence before we respond to you.
You must continue to make payments whilst a discount application is pending.
If you are liable for Council Tax
If any person who would be liable to pay the Council Tax is a person associated with a visiting force, the property is exempt, even though other people may also live there.
If you are not liable for Council Tax
If you have a 'relevant association' with a visiting force but are not liable for paying Council Tax (for example if you are renting a room), you are disregarded.
This means that the liable person will receive a 25% discount off Council Tax if they would otherwise live alone.
