Council Tax: Moving in or out
You'll need to complete a form on our Council Tax portal to tell us you're moving.
If you receive Council Tax Reduction or housing benefit
If you receive Council Tax Reduction or housing benefit, you will need to let the benefits team know that you've moved separately.
Select the option that applies to you:
When you can tell us you're moving
You can tell us up to 2 weeks before your moving date, but not earlier.
What you'll need to complete the form
You'll need:
- your phone number
- your email address
- the address and postcode of your new property
And the following, if applicable:
- if you are renting; your landlord or letting agents’ details
- if you've bought the property; the previous owners name (or their solicitors’ details)
Tell us via our Council Tax portal
Tell us by selecting 'I am moving into Buckinghamshire' on our Council Tax portal.
We'll then send you your first bill.

If you're moving within Buckinghamshire
Use this form if you're responsible for Council Tax and are moving within Buckinghamshire.
There is a different form if you're moving in with friends, family or into a care home.
If you're becoming responsible for Council Tax for the first time
There is a different form if you're moving into a property and will be responsible for Council Tax for the first time (for example moving out of your parent's house).

When you can tell us you're moving
You can tell us up to 2 weeks before your moving date, but not earlier.
What you'll need to complete the form
You'll need:
- your phone number
- your email address
- the address and postcode of your current property
- the date you'll move out;
- the address and postcode of your new property
- the date you'll move in
- your Council Tax account number
And if you're buying or selling the property, the:
- completion date
- names of the new owners (or their solicitors' details) of the property you have sold
- names of the previous owners (or their solicitors’ details) of the property you have bought
And if you're renting, the:
- tenancy end date
- tenancy start date
- your landlord or letting agents' details
Tell us via our Council Tax portal
Tell us by selecting 'I am moving within Buckinghamshire' on our Council Tax portal.
We'll then cancel your Council Tax at your previous address and send you a bill for the new one.

If you're moving out of Buckinghamshire
Use this form if you:
- are moving out of Buckinghamshire to another area
- will no longer be responsible for Council Tax at a Buckinghamshire address (for example, you're moving in with friends, family or into a care home)

You'll need:

- the address and postcode of your current property
- the date you'll move out
- the address and postcode of your new property
- your Council Tax account number
And if you're selling your property, the:

- cancel your Council Tax at your old Buckinghamshire address
- send you a final bill

Whilst you may be remaining within Buckinghamshire, on the form you will need to select 'I am moving out of Buckinghamshire'.

- the date you'll move out
- the address and postcode of your new property
- your Council Tax account number

Tell us by selecting 'I am moving into Buckinghamshire' on our Council Tax portal, and when asked if you:
- know the moving in date, select ‘No’
- have ever lived in the area before, select ‘No’
Choosing where you want the bill sent
Under other information you will be able to select if you want the bill sent to another address other than the property.

Tell us by selecting 'I am moving out of Buckinghamshire' on our Council Tax portal, and when asked:
- Is the sale date also the date you are moving out, select ‘No’
- Do you know the moving out date, select ‘No’
When you can tell us you're selling
You can tell us up to 2 weeks before the completion date, but not earlier.
What you'll need to complete the form
You'll need:
- your phone number
- your email address
- the address and postcode of your current property
- the date you'll move out
- the address and postcode of your new property
- your Council Tax account number
And if you're selling your property, the:
- completion date
- the new owners name (or their solicitors’ details)
Tell us via our Council Tax portal
Tell us by selecting 'I am moving out of Buckinghamshire' on our Council Tax portal.
We'll then:
- cancel your Council Tax at your second home
- send you a final bill
- check your account to see if you need a refund
Setting up paperless billing (e-billing)
If you opt for paperless billing (e-billing) on the portal, you will receive an email from [email protected].
This email will tell you how to set up an online Council Tax account.
Receiving e-bills
You will receive an email whenever a new bill is issued to you.
You should mark these emails as 'from a safe sender' so they do not go to your junk or spam folder.
You will not receive a paper bill if you opt for this billing method.
