Homeless and temporary accommodation
What you need to do when waiting for permanent accommodation
Whilst you are waiting for permanent accommodation:
- you must continue to pay your weekly charge for the temporary accommodation and abide by the rules set down by the accommodation provider. Failure to do so may result in you losing the temporary accommodation. This may result in the Council ending their duty to assist you. If this should happen you would then have to make your own housing arrangements
- continue to work with your housing advisor and to look for private rented housing, this may include working with our private rent officers
- aim to save up to four weeks rent, this will be required for rent in advance when you do move
- consider how you will secure carpets, furniture and white goods for your new home or where to go for help
- look for someone to assist you to move
Important information on timings
You will need to be prepared to move to your permanent accommodation at very short notice, sometimes with as little as 48 hours’ notice.
Failure to move into your new property may result in a breach of tenancy and also impact the duty that the council owes to you and so you must contact your housing advisor urgently if you intend not to move.
