New students given top tips for staying safe

As the new academic term begins, thousands of students will arrive on local university and college campuses, with Fresher’s Fairs top of their list for things to do. In Buckinghamshire, in addition to finding out about the many clubs and societies they can join and the good causes they can support, new students will be able to pick up important information and advice from the council’s Community Safety team.

Over the next few weeks, Buckinghamshire Council’s Community Safety team is attending college and university freshers’ fairs and new starter events across the county, providing advice and information on personal safety. The team will share advice on the best ways to keep safe both personally and for your property. They will be on hand with crime prevention tips and will also aim to raise awareness of issues concerning relationships including domestic abuse, violence against women and girls, harassment and stalking.

Arif Hussain, Deputy Cabinet Member for Community Safety said: “We know that starting college or university is an exciting new adventure for many young people. Buckinghamshire is a very safe area and our team is not looking to worry students. However, for many, this could be the first time they are living away from home, in a new area, so we just want to make sure they know how to keep themselves and their friends safe and where they can get further help and support if they need it.”
