Parking suspensions and dispensations
To temporarily reserve a parking space, you can apply for a parking:
- suspension
- dispensation
Parking suspension
A parking suspension is when a parking space or spaces are put out of use for a limited time.
For example, you can suspend a resident parking space for a short period, or a space in a car park run by the council.
Parking dispensation
With a parking dispensation you can park for a limited time in a place where there are parking restrictions.
For example, you can park temporarily on double yellow lines to carry out essential works where a vehicle is needed.
You can find out how long it takes to arrange a parking suspension or dispensation, and how much it costs:
We must get your application at least 28 days before you need a parking suspension or parking dispensation.
This is because we must follow a procedure when working on a parking suspension or dispensation.
This process includes:
- considering your need for a suspension or dispensation
- approving or turning down your application
- getting your payment
- making sure signs are in place to warn other road users and residents
We charge for parking suspensions or parking dispensations.
We charge for each space used, which is defined differently for on-street and off-street parking.
On-street parking spaces
We charge for each standard space (up to 6 metres).
Off-street (car park) spaces
We charge for each space.
How much we charge
Number of days | Charge |
---|---|
For the first 7 days | £17.60 per space, per day |
For days 8 to 14 | £19.80 per space, per day |
For 15 days and beyond | £22 per space, per day |
If you want to put a space out of use that is normally used for pay and display parking, there is an additional charge of £6.60 per space, per day.
If you want to reserve a parking space for a skip or anything that isn’t a vehicle, you may need to provide:
- a risk assessment or method statement
- public liability insurance
- a licence for on-street street works (email the street works team to apply for a licence)
We will also need to review your request before we can give you approval.
