Add or change a house name on your property
You can add or change the name of your house or commercial building online.
The name you choose must not be the same or similar to any other property name in the area.
This service costs £113.
Who can make a request
You must either be the owner of the property or have the permission of the person who owns it.
Request online
To make a request, you'll need to:
- provide us information about who provides water to the property
- make the payment online
If your property is hard to find, you'll need to provide a location plan.
What happens next
- We'll check with Royal Mail in case there is a property nearby with the same or a similar name. If there is, Royal Mail will suggest that you make another choice.
- We'll work with Royal Mail and notify all emergency services and council departments of the change.
Details of your property name or number will not be shown on an Ordnance Survey map until the change is confirmed. This can take up to 3 months.
If you're in the process of buying the property
To make an application for a property that you're in the process of buying, you should send in your application once contracts have been exchanged.
Your revised address will be registered once your purchase is completed.
What you'll need to do after it's changed
If your property has a postal number
If your property already has a postal number, you're still required to:
- use the house number in your address
- display the number on the property in a position where it can be clearly seen from the road
If your property just has a house name
You'll need to quote and display both names until you're reassured that everyone is using the new house name. This will ensure your property can be found quickly.
