Apply for an exemption from assistance duties (Equality Act 2010)
You can apply for an exemption certificate if you have a condition that means you're unable to carry assistance dogs or provide mobility assistance.
Apply for an exemption of your duty to provide mobility assistance (Section 165)
You'll need to send us 2 completed forms:
- you need to complete a wheelchair accessible vehicle exemption form [DOCX, 77 KB]
- your doctor will need to complete a wheelchair accessible vehicle health assessment [DOCX, 59 KB]

Apply for an exemption of your duty to carry an assistance dog (Section 169 or 171)
You'll need to send us 2 completed forms:
- you need to complete an assistance dog exemption form [DOCX, 81 KB]
- your doctor will need to complete an assistance dog exemption health assessment [DOCX, 57 KB]

After you've applied
Our Licensing Officer will review your application and evidence (usually within 28 days).
They'll decide if you should be exempt from your statutory duties (under the Equality Act 2010).
If it's approved, we'll send you an Exemption Certificate and an Exemption Notice. You need to display the Exemption Notice prominently in your licensed vehicle.
Appealing a decision
If we refused your application, you have the right to appeal to the Magistrates' court. This must be within 28 days of the date of our refusal notice.
