Taxi passenger fares

We set maximum taxi fares for journeys within Buckinghamshire.

A taxi must have a 'taximeter' fitted, which will show the fare you have to pay. We check these to confirm that they show the correct fare.

Fares are split between 3 tariffs based on:

  • time of day
  • public holidays
  • number of passengers and distance

Fares are correct as of 5 August 2024.

Tariff 1

Tariff 1 is valid from 6am to 11pm, Monday to Saturday.

At any time when a taxi is carrying five or more passengers, use Tariff 2.

Distance Fare

For the first 880 yards (804.67 metres) or part thereof

£5

For every other 176 yards (160.93 metres) or part thereof

£0.20

  • from 11pm to 6am, Monday to Saturday
  • for any hiring on a Sunday or on a bank holiday (other than those specified elsewhere)

If a hackney carriage is carrying five or more passengers, use Tariff 3.

Booking fee

Where a hackney carriage is booked under a contract for private hire for a journey which commences and finishes within the district, otherwise than while the hackney carriage is plying for hire or standing for hire at a rank, an advanced booking fee may be charged with the prior agreement of the hirer.

The maximum advanced booking fee that may be charged shall be no more than the maximum fare that is allowed under the applicable tariff set out in the above table of fares for the journey undertaken by the hackney carriage calculated from the present location of the hackney carriage (Point A) to the “pick up” location (Point B ) and the return journey from the hirer’s destination (Point C) back to the starting point (point A).*

*Point A to Point B +Point C back to Point A = maximum advance booking fee.

In these circumstances the maximum amount which may be charged to the passenger shall be no more than the advanced booking fee plus the fare for the journey as set out in the above table of fares.

The maximum amount that may be charged for hackney carriages used for corporate contract type work must not exceed the amount permitted under the terms of the contract.

Private hire

Private hire vehicles (PHVs or minicabs) must be pre-booked by phone or in person.

We do not set private hire fares. You should agree the fare with the operator before starting their journey. We do investigate complaints about overcharging.
