Historic landscape characterisation (HLC) project

The landscape of Buckinghamshire today is the result of natural and human actions which have taken place over many years.

Settlement, farming, and recreation have all left physical traces behind. They have given individual parts of the county their own special character.

To understand the historic dimension of today's landscape, we carried out a HLC project for Buckinghamshire.

Historic England, the government's adviser on the historic environment, funded the two-year desk-based project in partnership with Milton Keynes Council.

To create a countrywide character map of historic Buckinghamshire, we used:

  • aerial photographs
  • historic and modern maps
