Choosing an education provider

The difference between mainstream and specialist providers

Children with EHC plans can be educated in either mainstream or special schools.

Mainstream schools are maintained schools or academies that are not special schools. Some maintained mainstream schools and academies have Additionally Resourced Provision (ARP). In Buckinghamshire, there are ARPs specialising in helping children with:

  • Communication and interaction difficulties
  • Speech and language difficulties
  • Hearing impairment
  • Physical disability

Special schools are specially organised to give special educational help. All children attending a special school have special educational needs and an EHC plan.
