Apply for a late transfer grammar school test (12 and 13+)

About late grammar school testing

Late grammar school testing (the 12+ and 13+ exams) are for pupils currently in Years 7 and 8 who want a grammar school place in Years 8 or 9.

This could include children who didn't:

  • qualify for a grammar school place when they were in Year 6
  • take the transfer test
  • live in the county during testing

Our grammar schools are very popular.

Places are extremely limited, especially for pupils in Year 8 and 9. Most pupils do not get a place.

How to qualify for a test

Your child can only apply for a grammar school place in Year 8 or 9 under two circumstances.

For those who qualify, the qualification remains valid for one year following the test for some of the grammar schools.

1) If your child has moved into Buckinghamshire

If your child has moved into Buckinghamshire from outside the county or abroad you will need to make an in-year application for a grammar school place.

We will contact you to arrange a test date.

View more about the process of changing schools in-year.

2) If your child has already taken the transfer test

If your child has already taken the transfer test, you can apply for a place starting in September 2025, through the late transfer registration process.

Registration is between 7 October to 25 October 2024.

Grammar school places are extremely limited

Think carefully before you apply for a place.

Many children go through the process of:

  • preparation
  • testing
  • qualifying at testing

But can be disappointed when there are no places to offer to them.

For September 2023 entry, no places were offered for either Year 8 or Year 9 in the first round of allocations in March.

Entry to Year 10 or Year 11

Applications for entry to year 10 or year 11 must be made directly to your preference grammar school.

When you can register

From 7 October 2024 you can register for testing for entry in September 2025 with preferences for the following schools:

  • Aylesbury Grammar School
  • Aylesbury High School
  • Beaconsfield High School
  • Burnham Grammar School
  • Chesham Grammar School
  • John Hampden Grammar School
  • The Royal Latin School - Year 8 only
  • Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School

For testing for entry into any other Buckinghamshire grammar school, you must refer directly to their school’s website.

Do not include any other schools (Buckinghamshire or other local authority areas) because we will not process these.

Carefully consider your grammar school preferences.

If you decide to register your child for testing, we encourage you to list your true preferences at the time of registration. Preference changes after the first round of allocations will only be accepted where there has been an evidenced change of circumstance, for example a change of home address.
