Guide to grammar schools and the Secondary Transfer Test

Last updated: 15 April 2024

Test dates for Secondary Transfer Test

The Secondary Transfer Test dates for children due to move up to secondary school in September 2025 are 10 and 12 September 2024. Children attending Buckinghamshire primary schools and Partner schools will be tested in school on these dates.

Children who attend any other school will sit the tests at a grammar school or another central test venue. For most children this will be on 10 and 12 September. For some children, testing may be slightly later.

Dates and test venues will be confirmed when formal invitations are emailed to parents by 9 August (check your junk or spam folders if you are expecting a test invitation but do not receive one by this time – contact admissions if you are unable to locate it). You cannot choose a test time, date, or venue: these will be allocated to you.

'Identification and Fit for Testing' form for out of county children

If your child is taking the tests at a grammar school or and we will send you an 'Identification and Fit for Testing' form with your testing invitation.

This form is to enable you to confirm that your child is well on the test date. You should attach a photograph of your child to the form so we can check their identity too.

This form must be completed and you need to bring it to the to the Secondary Transfer Testing session; without this form we will not be able to test your child.

If your child goes to a state funded Buckinghamshire primary school or Partner School, you do not need to fill in this form as your child's identity is confirmed by the school.

Children living abroad

All testing happens in the UK. If your child currently lives abroad, but not moving to the UK, let us know when they will be in the UK and we will arrange for them to be tested.
